Suggested Excursions

Chablis. If you want to go to Chablis then you could do it on your way back. Just take the Tonnere route in reverse. Go up the A6 towards Paris and take the Nitry turn off. In Nitry take the left turn to Chablis ( sign posted). From Chablis you rejoin the route north at Tonnere and follow the instructions in reverse from there.

Savigny les Beaune. On the North East side of Beaune quite a pretty place with a chateau that is a bit of a tourist attraction especially for children. The owner has put together a collection of old cars, motor bikes and planes. But the village is attractive a the wine is good and several places to try. We go to Paul Chollet who produces an excellent Cremant de Bourgogne. He is to be found as you enter Savigny. You can also eat at Le Morgan.

St Romain, Le Rochpot, These are villages to the south beyond Pommard and Mersault where if you want to try some good wines then stop there on your way through. La Rochpot has a fairy tale castle which apparently is worth visiting. We occasional eat at the Auberge on the main road. We buy wine from Pouleau Ponavoy which is lower end of the market but he can be fun but there are several families of this name here. For better wine go through St Romain to Haute St Romain and go to Alan Gras. Charming man, beautiful house, stunning views and great wines.

Chateauneuf en Auxois. Incredible medieval hill top village with a fantastic castle. Great views over the Val d'Ouche. On the way you could eat at Vandenesse. There are two places. Chez Lucotte which is on the left before you cross the canal to Commarin. Very basic but if you want to try a 'plat de jour' in very local surroundings this is the place to do it. Across the canal is a more up market hotel and restaurant.

Eating. As well as the above there is Le Petit Paradis in a curving street between the Cathedral and the market in Beaune - excellent and the Bouzerotte in Bouze les Beaune on the way to Lusigny/Bligny from Beaune.
